To keep an instructor fully employed (40 hours per week) takes, on average, about 70 pupils per year. This can produce a net income of £28,000 per annum depending on the number of hours worked, the lesson rate charged and the cost of any franchise fee and associated running costs. All instructors have to pass a three part exam set by the Driving Standards Agency in order to gain a licence to trade as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Having qualified, the question for most is whether they set up thier own business or take on a franchise with one of the many national or regional driving schools.
